Building on the success of Tree City USA, the ADF created a Tree Campus USA program in 2008 for the college and university administrations, faculty, staff, and students that were asking for their own program. As of 2015, there were 252 schools recognized as Tree Campus USA’s and nearly 3 million students enrolled in those schools. In Alabama, there are 13 schools recognized and more are working to the meet the standards for coming years.

How Can My College or University Become a Tree Campus USA?
Any 2- or 4-year institution of higher learning may become a Tree Campus USA regardless of its size. They must meet the five standards set by the Arbor Day Foundation to qualify. The standards are:
- Have a Campus Tree Advisory Committee
- Create and utilize a Campus Tree Care Plan
- Follow a Campus Tree Program with Dedicated Annual Expenditures
- Celebrate an Arbor Day Observance annually
- Complete a Service Learning Project
